Explain the classification for Type 1 hair.
Straight hair. Hair is very soft and can be difficult to hold curl.
Explain the classification for Type 3 hair.
Curly hair. Has combination texture. Definite curl with lots of body.
Explain the classification for Type 4 hair.
Very curly hair. Fragile and tightly coiled. Has more of a ‘z’ pattern.
Explain the classification for Type 2 hair.
Wavy hair. Definite ‘s’ pattern. Generally holds the style well.
What is the epidermis?
Outer layer of the skin.
What is the dermis?
Inner layer of the skin.
What is the hair shaft?
The portion of hair above the skin/scalp.
What is the hair follicle?
Where the hair grows from. Stretches from the hair bulb through the epidermis.
What is the sebaceous gland?
The gland which produces natural oil called sebum which protects and conditions the hair.
What is the purpose of the sweat gland?
To cool the surface of the skin by producing sweat.
What is the purpose of the arrector pili muscle?
In order to heat the body, when cold, this muscle contract. This causes the hair to stand on end.
List, in order, the 3 stages of hair growth.
Anagen/ Catagen/ Telogen
What are the consequences of not carrying out necessary tests on the hair prior to a service?
- Damage to the hair/ disintegration of hair
- Damage to the skin
- Allergic reaction
- Legal action
A symptom that prevents a service from being carried out is known as what?
Contra-indication.
