Chapter 2 Flashcards
What are axially loaded members?
Structural components subjected to tension or compression.
What does it mean for a material to be linearly elastic?
This means that load and elongation is proportional. That is, behavior follows Hooke’s law.
How are stress and strain related?
By young’s modulus E
σ = Eε
What is axial rigidity?
The product of E and A
What is stiffness?
Stiffness is the force required to produce a unit elongation, or P/δ. Denoted by k
What is flexibility?
Flexibility is the elongation due to a unit load, or δ/P.
Denoted by f
What does k equal?
= EA / L
What does f equal?
= L / EA
What is the effective area of a cable?
The effective area of a cable is the total cross - sectional area of the individual wires that make up the cable.
