Chapter 2 Flashcards
What are the three points of John Dalton’s atomic theory?
- Elements are composed of atoms
- In chemical reactions, atoms move from one substance to another
- Compounds form when atoms combine
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of an element
What are the 3 laws of chemistry?
- The law of conservation of mass (rearrangement)
- The law of constant composition (ratio)
- The law of multiple proportions (you cannot have half an atom therefore the subscripts must be whole)
Who discovered electrons?
J.J. Thomson using the Cathode Ray Tube Experiment
What charge do electrons have?
Negative 1
What region of the atom are electrons found in?
The outer region of the atom
Who found the nucleus?
Rutherford using the gold foil experiment
What is found in the nucleus? (* the two subatomic particles)
Protons- which have a positive 1 charge
and
Neutrons- which do not have a charge
The atomic # equals INSERT Z SYMBOL
of protons
In a neutral atom the # of protons equals
of electrons
Mass Number (A) equals
of protons + # of electrons
An isotope has
same # of protons, but different electrons
The nuclear symbol is made up of what 3 components? INSERT PHOTO
Mass #, atomic #, and element symbol
Nuclear stability for lighter elements means
The # of protons = the # of neutrons
Nuclear stability for heavier elements means
of protons
Unstable isotopes may give off what 3 types of radiation
- Beta particles (β)
- Alpha particles (α)
- Gamma radiation(γ)
