Checks and balances
Each branch of the American government has some extent of influence over each other so that one branch does not become too powerful
Faction
A group formed to seek some goal within a political party or government
Federalists
A person who supported federalism, in favor of a strong central government
Anti Federalists
A person opposed to federalism/ the expansion of the federal government
Coalition
A government created in a time of national difficulty of crisis
Bill of rights
The first ten amendments to the constitution of the United States
Habeas corpus
A petition filed with a court with a person who objects to his own or another person’s punishment
Bill of attainder
An act of legislature declaring a person guilty of a crime and punishing them without a trial.
Ex post facto law
This law impairs the obligation of a contract
Amendments
An alteration or addition to a bill
Line item veto
Power of an executive to cancel specific provisions of a bill
Concurrent powers
Powers given to both states and the federal government by the U.S. Constitution
