Chapter 2 - 3D Team Leadership Flashcards
Explain the 3 pitfalls with the “there is no ‘I’ in teams” ideology?
- Individuals are more likely to move on to other companies if they feel undervalued as individuals
- When members become fearful of being accused of not being a team player, they may withhold valuable dissenting opinions and easily agree to potentially devastating false consensus
- The tendency to overlook the relationships between subteams – once an overall team is up and running. Can lead to faultlines: unhealthy subteam divides where teams are likely to fracture
Describe the three dimensions of 3D Team Leadership
- The Individuals in teams
- The subteams
- The team as a whole
What does a team leader need to do to identify and solve team needs? (4)
- Set team goals
- Establish strategic frameworks to guide team decision making
- Implement team bonuses
- Design and monitor the amount of interdependence members use to complete tasks
Explain the concept of multilayered interdependence.
intense level of interdependence composed of
o With-in subteam interdependence: within each specific subteam, members work interdependently with one another (very much like a small overall team).
- Between subteam interdependence: subteams typically have to coordinate their efforts and work interdependently with the other subteams.
- Across subteam interdependence: the interdependence that connects an overall team (composed of the various subteams) to its external environment.
