Chapter 2 Flashcards
(12 cards)
Bipolar neuron
One axon and one dendrite
Multipolar Neuron
One axon and many dendrites.
Unipolar neuron
A neuron with one axon attached to it’s soma. The axon divides with one branch receiving sensory signals and the other sending info to the CNS
Axoplasmic transport
An active process by which substances are propelled along the microtubules.
Astrocyte
A glial cell that provides support for the neuron.
Provides nutrients and other substances.
Regulates the chemical composition of the extracellular fluid.
Oligodendrocyte
Glial cell in the CNS that forms myelin sheaths
Microglia
Smallest glial cell
Protects the brain from invading microorganisms
Blood brain barrier
A semipermeable barrier between the blood and the brain produced by cells in the walls of the brain’s capillaries
Area Postrema
A region of the medulla where the blood-brain barrier is weak.
Poisons are detected and can initiate vomiting.
Sodium-potassium transported
A protein found in the membrane of all cells that extrudes sodium ions from and transports potassium ions into the cell.
Saltatory conduction
Conduction of action potentials by myelinated axons.
Jumps from nodes of Ranvier.
Acetylcholine
A neurotransmitter found in the brain, spinal chord, and parts of the PNS
Muscle contraction
