Chapter 2: Flashcards
Domains
Bacteria: Most diverse and widespread
Archae: Live in Earth’s most extreme environments, such as salty lakes and boiling hot springs. Includes multiple kingdoms.
Eukarya: Plantae, fungi, animalia, protists
When was the “Origin of Species” published?
1859
Inductive reasoning is…
…reasoning in which the premises seek to supply strong evidence for (not absolute proof of) the truth of the conclusion.
Deductive reasoning is…
…is the process of reasoning from one or more statements (premises) to reach a logically certain conclusion
Mode organism
A species that is easy to grow in the lab and lends itself particularly well to the questions being investigated.
Who discovered DNA and when?
Watson and Crick in 1953.
What are the essential elements for life and what percentage of life do they make up?
Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen and Nitrogen and they make up 96% of life.
What are the trace elements of life?
Calcium, Phosphorous, Potassium and Sulfur.
What is an “emergent property?”
It is conceived as a process whereby larger entities, patterns, and regularities arise through interactions among smaller or simpler entities that themselves do not exhibit such properties.
What is a radioactive isotope?
One in which the nucleus decays spontaneously, giving off particles and energy.
Covalent Bond
Sharing of a pair of valence electrons by two atoms.
Valence
The # of unpaired electrons required to complete the atom’s outermost shell.
Electronegativity
The attraction of a particular atom for the electrons of a covalent bond.
Chemical Equilibrium means…but does not mean…
…reactions are still going on but with no net effect on the concentration of reactants and products…does not mean that the reactants and products are equal in concentration, but only that their concentration have stabilized at a particular ratio.
