What is a Hippocratic Oath?
An oath from Hippocrates the ancient Greek that requires a new physician to swear upon healing gods that he will follow professional ethical standards. Binds the student to his teacher and the community of physicians
What is a profession?
A calling that requires specialized training and membership in a group that uses codes of conduct or codes of ethics, including requirements for continuing education and payment of periodic membership fees
What is autonomy?
An individual’s right to self-determination. How much self rule the patient has. They decide to accept or refuse treatment.
What is beneficence?
The act of performing goodness and kindness out of the best interest of the patient. Always act to improve the patient’s condition.
What is non-malfeasance?
The principle that requires a practitioner to do not harm to a patient by not performing up to professional standards.
What is justice?
The principle that requires giving others what is due to them. Allocation of scarce health resources, who gets what treatment (fair and equal). Like who receives organ donors.
What is the medical ethics committee?
A group of knowledgeable healthcare-related experts who are convened to provide advice and assistance if an unusual complicated ethical arises. When there is time, ask here.
What are bioethics?
The study of the ethical and moral implications of new biological discoveries and advances. Just because we can doesn’t mean we should.
What are Institutional Review Boards?
Ethics committees that supervise research. Are required to get approved by this if using human subjects in research.
What is common rule?
The common name for 45 CFR Part 46, which protects fetuses, neonates, pregnant women, prisoners, and children.
