Mass protests in Petrograd over the food shortages and war.
What was the role of the army in the revolution?
Soldiers of the volinskii regiment mutinied and refused to suppress protests.
What happened to the Tsar on 2nd March 1917?
He abdicated the crown in favor of his brother, who refused the throne.
What replaced the Tsarist regime?
The Provisional Government and the Petrograd Soviet in a dual authority rule put themselves in place

Initially Prince Lvov, later Alexander Kerensky.
What was Order No. 1?
Order Issued by the Petrograd Soviets where military should follow Soviet orders over the provisional government.
Why was the Provisional Government weak?
It had no real power without the support of the Soviet.
How did the Provisional Government try to maintain control?
Had promised elections, continued the war, allowed free speech and political freedoms.
Why did the Provisional Government lose support?
It failed to solve or properly deal with land, food, and war issues.
How did the Bolsheviks react to the new government?
Initially hesitant but later opposed it, pushing for Soviet rule. (All power to the soviets)
