Define Coercive Power
Ability to punish another for not meeting requirements (Negative side of reward power)
Define Reward Power
Ability to reward another person for meeting requirements.
Define Referent Power
The desire to identity with or imitate another
Define Expert Power
The belief that a person has expertise that others do not
Define Legitimate Power
Power derived from being in a position of authority.
Define Negative Power
The ability to disrupt organisations e.g. industrial action, refusal to communicate.
Define Authority
The right to do something or request and expect another person to do something. It allows people to make decisions and assign tasks.
What is the difference between responsibility and accountability?
Responsibility - the obligation a person has to fulfil a task assigned to them. Can be delegated to subordinates
Accountability - a person’s liability to be called to account for the fulfilment of a task. Cannot be delegated to subordinates
Define Line Manager
Direct authority over subordinates
Define Staff Manager
Authority in advisory capacity l
Define Functional Manager
Hybrid of Line and Staff Manager. Has authority to control activities in another department e.g. finance manager requiring timely reporting from sales manager

Temporary team manager
Define HR Culture
Focus on being flexible to internal needs.
Define Open Systems Culture
Internally flexible but adapts to constantly changing external environment
Define Rational Goal Culture
Procedurally driven but adapts to external conditions.
