Chapter 2 Flashcards
First law?
energy is conserved
Is energy an extensive or intensive property?
Extensive
How is energy transfered in closed systems?
By work and heat.
When is work positive or negative?
Work is positive when done by the system. Work is negative when done on the system.
The equation for total change in energy of a system is used for an idealized process
true
What is a quasi equilibrium process?
An idealized process where a gas undergoes expansion or compression in a sequence or equilibrium states.
Is work a property of the system?
No, it is path dependent.
What is an adiabatic process?
A process without heat transfer.
When is heat (Q) positive and negative?
Positive when heat is transfered to the system. Negative when heat is lost from the system.
What are the 3 ways energy can be transfered by heat.
Conduction, convection, radiation.
What is convection?
Energy transfer between a solid surface and an adjacent gas or liquid.
What is conduction?
Energy transfer through direct contact.
What is thermal radiation?
Energy transfer by photons. (can take place in a vacuum)
What is a thermal reservoir ?
Constant temperature
What is a power cycle?
Generates work using an energy source at a high temperature.
