Chapter 2-Blood components Flashcards
Blood Components
What are two different configurations of the collection packs?
B1: The buffy coat collection set: is used in the production of RBC, plasma, and platelet components.
**B2: **The whole blood filtration set: is used in the production of RBC and plasma components (including cryoprecipitate).
Which RBC Ag are tested on each unit?
ABO and Rh D typing and Kell
*A proportion of donors are also phenotyped for additional red cell antigens corresponding to common clinically significant antibodies (C,c,E,e,Jka, Jkb, Fya, Fyb, S,s).
* Negative results for any of these antigens appear on the label.
How much does one unit of red blood cells increase hemoglobin concentration in a 70 kg non-bleeding adult?
One unit of red blood cells usually increases the hemoglobin concentration by approximately 10 g/L.
What is the shelf life of a red blood cell unit that is opened without a sterile connection device when stored at 1-6°C?
The shelf life is limited to 24 hours if stored at 1-6°C, or the original expiry date, whichever is sooner.
What is the shelf life of a red blood cell unit if stored above 6°C after being opened without a sterile connection device?
The shelf life is limited to 4 hours if stored above 6°C.
How old must red blood cell units selected for irradiation be at Canadian Blood Services?
Units selected for irradiation must be less than or equal to 14 days old after collection.
What is the maximum time after irradiation that irradiated red blood cells must be transfused?
Irradiated cells must be transfused as soon as possible, but no later than 14 days after irradiation.
What are the storage conditions required for red blood cell components?
Red blood cell components must be stored at** 1–6°C** in a temperature-controlled storage device with an alarm system, air-circulating fan, and continuous monitoring device.
What is the allowable temperature range for red blood cell transport systems for transit times of 24 hours or less?
A transport system validated to maintain an environmental temperature of 1–10°C is allowable.
What is the maximum transportation time for red blood cells using shipping containers validated to maintain a temperature of 1–6°C?
Transportation time for red blood cells should not exceed 24 hours.
What must be performed and documented at the time of shipping and receiving blood components?
Visual inspection of each blood component must be performed and documented at the time of shipping and receiving.
What is the responsibility of the issuing hospital transfusion service when a patient is transferred with accompanying red blood cell units?
The issuing hospital transfusion service is responsible for notifying the receiving hospital transfusion service to ensure traceability of the red blood cells.
The receiving hospital transfusion service must document the final disposition, including whether the RBC was transfused or discarded.
The unit anticoagulant , Additive solution and shelf life of a RBC unit ?
- Anticoagulant: CPD
- Additive solution: The red blood cells are mixed with the additive solution saline-adenine-glucose-mannitol** (SAGM**) and labelled as a red blood cell unit.
The shelf life of a red blood cell unit issued by Canadian Blood Services is 42 days from collection.
