Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is the difference between internet (small ‘i’) and
Internet (capital ‘I’)?
Internet (small ‘i’) is a group of interconnected computer networks, while Internet
(capital ‘I’) connects networks all over the world.
What is the World Wide Web (Web)?
A subset of Internet computers that are easily accessible to each other and includes
easy-to-use interfaces.
What was the goal of creating a worldwide network in the
early 1960s?
To connect computers and weapons, remain operational even if parts of the network
were destroyed, and avoid the inherent risk of single-channel connection.
What is a Local Area Network (LAN)?
A network of computers located close together.
What is a Wide Area Network (WAN)?
A network of computers connected over greater distances
How do network access providers sell Internet access
rights?
Directly and through Internet service providers (ISPs).
Explain how a telephone call works.
It establishes a single connection path between caller and receiver and transmits data
along that single path.
What is circuit switching?
It is a centrally controlled, single-connection model.
Disadvantage of circuit switching ?
a break in any circuit causes interruption and data loss.
What are packets labelled with in a packet-switched
network?
Origin, sequences, and destination addresses.
What does the destination computer do with the packets in
a packet-switched network?
It collects packets and reassembles the original file or email message.
What is the function of routers in a network?
To forward each packet to its destination
What is the function of hubs, switches, and bridges in a
network?
To move packets from one part of the network to another.
What is a public network?
A network available to the public and lacks basic security measures.
What is a private network?
A leased-line connection between two companies that physically connects their
computers or networks together.
