A

Loin (waist)

22
Q

Peritone/o

A

Peritoneum (membrane surrounding the abdominal organs)

23
Q

Pharyng/o

A

Pharynx (throat)

24
Q

Retroperitoneal area

A

Area behind the peritoneum. Contains the kidneys

25
Q

Disc

A

Flexible connective tissue between each backbone. Made of cartilage and provides cushion

26
Q

Cervix

A

Lower portion of the uterus opening to the vagina

27
Q

Supine

A

Facing up

28
Q

Prone

A

Facing down

29
Q

Lumbar puncture (“spinal tap”)

A

The patient lies on their side with knees drawn up to the abdomen and chin brought down to the chest. This increases space between the vertebrae. A needle is inserted between L3-L4 or L4-L5 and CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) is withdrawn, or medication is injected. By injecting below the end of the spinal cord (around L2), this reduces risk of injury to spinal cord

30
Q

Epiglottis

A

A flap of cartilage that closes over the trachea during swallowing so the bolus (mass) of food travels down the esophagus rather than the trachea

31
Q

Sacr/o VS Sarc/o

A

Sacr/o: the sacrum
Ex. sacral, relating to the saccrum

Sarc/o: flesh
Ex. sarcoma, a malignant tumor of connective tissue

32
Q

Tracheotomy

A

This procedure is used to open the trachea below a blockage of a foreign body or tumor to allow airflow
