Chapter 2 Flashcards
Cell membrane
Surrounds and protects the cell and regulates what passes in and out of the cell.
Nucleus
Hint:
Controls operations of the cell.
Chromosomes
Rod like structured within the nucleus. Each person has 46 chromosomes.
Karotype
Photograph of individual chromosomes. Arranged by size, shape, and number.
Downsyndrome
47 chromosomes. 1 extra
Anabolism
Hint: construction
Process building large proteins from small proteins.
Cell membrane
Structure that surrounds and protects the cell.
Cytoplasm
Material of the cell located outside of the nucleus yet enclosed in cell membrane
Genes
Regions of DNA within each chromosome
Mitochondria
Small sausage like structures are principal source of energy
Endo plastic reticulum
Network of canals within cytoplasm; site of protein synthesis.
DNA
Chemical found in each Chromosomes.
Chromosomes
Rod shaped structures in the nucleus that contain regions called genes.
Anterior (Ventral)
Front surface of the body.
Deep
Away from surface
Distal
Far from the point of attachment to the trunk or far from structure.
Frontal (Coronal) plane
Vertical plane dividing the body into anterior and posterior positions.
Example: x ray of chest looks from back to front.
Inferior
Below another structure; pertaining to lower part of the body.
Lateral
Pertaining to the side
Medial
Pertaining to the middle
Posterior ( distal)
Back surface of the body
Prone
Lying on belly; face down.
Proximal
Near the point of attachment
Sagittal(lateral) plane
Lengthwise, vertical plane right and left sides of the body. Sagitta meaning arrow.
Superficial
On the surface
Transverse
Hint: Divide
Horizontal plane dividing the body into upper and lower portions.
Catabolism
Cata=down
Complex nutrients are broken down into similar substances and energy is released.
Metabolism
Total of chemical processes in a cell.
Histologist
Scientist who studies tissue
Viscera
Medical term internal organs.
Larynx
Voice box
Pleaura
Membrane surrounding lungs
Pharnyx
Throat
Ureter
Tube from kidney to the urinary bladder.
Adipose tissue
Collection of fat cells
Pituitary gland
Endocrine organ located base of the brain
Trachea
Wind pipe
Cartilage
Flexible connective tissue attached to bones and joints
