Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is thermal conductivity?
A measure of how good something is at conducting
What is a thermal insulator?
The reduction of heat transfer between objects
What is a thermal conductor?
Something good at transferring heat energy
What is specific heat capacity?
The amount of energy needed to change the temperature of 1kg of the substance by 1°C
What is the unit for specific heat capacity?
J/kg°C
How do you calculate specific heat capacity?
Specific heat capacity= energy/mass x change in temperature
How does conduction work in metals?
Metals are the best conductors of energy (e.g. copper is a better conductor than steel)
How does conduction work in non metals
Non metal material are better insulators
What are the factors that affect insulation?
Thickness of the material (the thicker the better)
Thermal conductivity ( the lower the better the insulator)
What are the three factors temperature rise depends on?
Amount of energy supplied to it
Mass of the substance
What the substance is
How do you prevent heat loss from a house
Loft insulation
Cavity wall insulation
Double glazed windows
Aluminium foil
External walls
What is black body?
An object that absorbs all the radiation that hits it
