Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is the order of things that need to be done when an individual enters an exercise clinic
- Preparticipation health screening
- Free exercise evaluation/risk factor analysis
- Informed consent
- Exercise testing
What are the goals of a preparticipation health screening
To identify individuals who…
Should receive medical clearance before initiating an exercise program or increasing the frequency, intensity, and/or volume of the current program
Play significant disease who may benefit from participating in a medically supervised exercise program
With medical conditions that may require exclusion from exercise programs and tell those conditions are abated or better control
What are the different testing questionnaires and what’s the difference between them
PAR-Q (Worst)
PAR-Q+ Was developed to reduce barriers for exercise and false positive screenings, also has more technical terms than previous PAR-Q so some may need help going through it
PARMEDX
Health history questionnaire (Best)
What should a health history questionnaire minimally assess
- Family history of CMR disease
- Personal history of CMR disease
- Surgical History
- Past and present health behaviors/habits (smoking & PA)
- Current use of various drugs/medication
- Specific history of various signs and symptoms suggestive of CMR disease
What medical examinations or labs should measure at a minimum
Fasting serum total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and fasting plasma glucose
Parts of a preparticipation physical activity screening process
PA or Exercise History
Known CMR disease
ACSM Major Signs or Symptoms
Individuals with these biomarkers should not be allowed to participate in any form of physical activity program and or exercise test
Absolute contraindications to exercise
Maybe excepted or allowed into a PA assessment and her program if it is deemed that the benefits for the individual outweigh the risks to the individual
Relative contraindications to exercise
Age
male 45 or older, female 55 or older
- First degree male relative >55, female >65 if suffered from cardiac event
Smoking
Currently or has quit in the last six months
Sedentary lifestyle
Not been participating in 30 minute more of moderate intensity physical activity on three days per week for the last three months
Obesity
BMI greater than 30
Hypertension
Blood pressure greater than 140/90
Dyslipidemia
LDL > 130 or HDL < 40 or on lipid lowering medications or total cholesterol >200 (must all be assessed on two separate occasions)
Diabetes
Fasting plasma glucose >126 or HbA1C >6.5%
