- read the main scale (directly opposite the zero mark on the vernier scale)
- find the scale lines that align the vernier scale and main scale
- final reading = main scale + vernier scale

- take note of the initial volume 
- lower the object in the cylinder
- take note of the final volume
 (volume of object = final - original)
2) displacement can
- fill up water to the opening 
- lower object in the can, water would slowly displace out of it
- the water is collected in a measuring cylinder
