Puritan convert and leader. He became a lawyer and was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Believed that God was in charge not government or kings.
Roger Williams
Puritan convert and leader. Settled in Massachusetts and had religious differences with Winthrop and was banished. Founder and leader of Rhode Island. Believed in separation of church and state.
John Locke
A philosopher who believed in democracy.
People are innately good
A strong central government is not needed
People have basic rights of life, liberty, and property
Thomas Hobbes
A philosopher who believe in monarchy
People are bad, can’t be trusted
A strong central government is needed
People give power to the government not God

Jean-Jacques Rousseau
A philosopher who believed in an agreement between the people to create government known as social contract.
The social contract is formed by people, government works for the people.
“The English people believes itself to be free -they are free only during the election of Members of Parliament. After election, people are enslaved and are nothing.”
