Who is Crooks
Crooks is the stable buck. He is smart and strong man but is looked down upon because of his race. The name ‘Crooks’ comes from his crooked back.
Who is Candy
Candy is an old ranchworker who lost his hand in a work accident and now works as a swamper on the ranch. He is the man who meets George and Lennie at the bunkhouse in the beginning of Chapter 2.
Who is the Boss and what is he like
The boss is the owner of the ranch and watches over everyone. He can be nice but can get mad sometimes. He is not very nice to Crooks, the stable buck because he is black, and there was discrimination against African-Americans in this time period.
What is George’s surname
Milton
What is Lennie’s surname
Small
Why does the boss initially think George is taking advantage of Lennie
Because of Lennie’s disability, George speaks for him. But, the boss thinks George is taking advantage of Lennie by taking his money away.
What does George say to make the boss less sceptical
That they are cousins and the reason he is speaking for Lennie is because he got kicked in the head by a horse, and that it is the reason for his disability.
Who is Slim
Slim is a master of his craft and is the most respected man on the ranch. He is described as a ‘jerkline skinner’ which means that he has the authority over the grain team. He is calm and feels empathy for the other characters.
Who is Curley
Curley is a very aggressive and violent character. He is the Boss’s son and takes advantage of the power that he has over the other men on the ranch to treat them cruelly and pick fights. He is physically small and so is resentful of bigger men
What does Candy say about the glove on Curley’s left hand
He is keeping it full of vaseline to make his hand ‘soft’ for his wife
Who is Curley’s wife
Curley’s wife is the only female character who is directly featured in the novel. Many of the male characters on the ranch feel threatened by her, calling her jailbait because she is flirtatious and her husband is jealous and violent. They perceive her to be a tart because of the way that she acts around all of the men on the ranch.
Why does Carlson want to shoot Candy’s dog
The dog is very old, it cannot walk, doesn’t smell very nice
