Chapter 19.4 Flashcards
Ecological Community
Interacting populations in a given habitat
Diversity of a community
the existence of many different kinds of plants and animals in an environment
Primary succession
Happens in an evironment which didn’t contain life before.
Secondary succession
When an area develops life in an area that had been previously disturbed (lava flow, wildfire, etc.) Nutrients and oil are left behind in small amounts.
Trophic level
The trophic level of an organism is the position it occupies in a food web.
Equilibrium
the state in which all forces acting on the body are balanced with an equal and opposite force.
Net primary productivity
the rate of accumulation of biomass or energy
Autotroph
an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals.
Gross primary productivity
the amount of carbon fixed during photosynthesis by all producers in the ecosystem
Biomagnification
the rise or increase in the contaminated substances caused by the intoxicating environment
Food web
consists of all food chains in a single ecosystem
Symbiosis
a mutually beneficial relationship between different people or groups.
Hydrosphere
The sum of all water on earth.
Eutrophication
the process in which a water body becomes overly enriched with nutrients, leading to the plentiful growth of simple plant life, but decrease in animal life.
