Chapter 192; Disaster Prepardness Flashcards

1
Q

What is Surge Capacity and what are its three components?

A

Surge Capacity is a set of protocols that encompass multi-disciplinary action for prepardness to manage capacity that exceeds typical hospital function

  1. Staff
  2. Stuff

Q

What is the adult triage technique for multiple-casualty triage?

A

“START”
Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment
It includes a quick Respiratory, Perfusion and Mentation exam (RPM)

Q

What is the Pediatric Triage Technique in Multiple-Casualty Triage ?

A

Pediatric Triage Tape - Changes in proportion to patient size.
Principles of the triage remain the same, look at ventilation, perfusion and ability to follow commands and subdivide into priorities

Q

Regardless of Adult of Pediatric, What are the only two interventions that are performed during a triage situation?

Q

If a patient has no respiratory effort after opening the airway, what is the next step in a multi-casualty situation?

A

Unfortunately, this patient is dead. Label as Black and move to the next patient. No CPR is performed in these situations unless adequate personal to continue triage

Q

What is the SAVE approach/Criteria?

A
  1. Those who will die regardless of care
  2. Those who will survive without care
  3. Those who benefit from field interventions

Q

What is the benefit of the SAVE approach?

A

Helps personnel in the field decide where resources will be best allocated.
IE. you have 2 chest tubes and 3 victims. 2 victims need 1 tube each and the third needs bilateral. This principle dictates you save 2, as they have a better survival chance.
