Chapter 19- Seperating Mixtures Flashcards
Mixtures
When two or mode substances are mingled together but not chemically combined
Name the four methods of separating mixtures:
Filtration
Evaporation
Distillation
Chromatography
Filtration
Serpentes insoluble solid from liquid
Eg. Soil from Walter
Use filter paper in a funnel, pour solvent through
Evaporation
Separates soluble solid from liquid
Eg. NaCh and H20
Heat solution until solvent evaporates, solute will be left on dish
Distillation
Two miscible liquids/soluble solid and solvent
Eg. Alcohol and water/ NaCh and H2O
Water and alcohol mixture heated to 80* (alcohol boils at 78*)
School evaporates and then condenses
D vantage to distillation
Both substances can be collected after the experiment
In distillation what is the distillate and the residue?
Distillate -the liquid that evaporates
Residue -the substance that is left in the original place
Chromatography
-marker dot on chromatography paper
-water goes up paper, carries ink
-colours in ink will have different levels of solubility
-low solubility= low level on chromatography paper
Vice versa
