Chapter 19 LAB Flashcards
protozoa
eukaryotic signle-celled organisms
Cyst form
typically spherical or ovoid in shape, dormant, think-shelled and resistant to the environment
Trophozoite form
typically motile, with flagella or cilia, may be pear-shaped or flat ovals
Entamobea coli
Cysts, are common, non-pathogenic intestinal commensal of humans. Related species cause disease common in areas with poor sanitation
Actions of Entamobea coli
Cysts pass through the stomach to reach intestines, once trophozoites emerge they parasite the intestinal mucosa and feed on red blood cells and bacteria
Symptoms of Enatmobea coli
abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting
Giardia lamblia cysts
lives in intestines, involves a person ingesting fecal contaminated water or food, trophozoite form has flagella and a sucking disk that enables it to hold onto the epithelial cells
Giardia lamblia cysts Symptoms
most infections are asymptomatic, but heavy infections can lead to chronic diarrhea and dehydration
Trichomonas vaginalis trophozoite
causative agent of trichomoniasis, an infection of the vulva and vagina. ONLY trophozoites, spread through sexual intercourse
Plasmodium gametocyte
causative agent of malaria, insect and human hosts (Anopheles mosquito) when infected, organisms live in the red blood cells and liver cells eventually causing them to burst and release more organisms
Toxoplasma gondii (not using in lab)
only cats can excrete the infective occysts. if someone eats or handles cat feces or eats undercooked meat
Toxoplasma gondii symptoms
flu like, however in pregnant women the fetus suffers complications such as brain damage etc.
