Chapter 19 Equilibrium Flashcards
Define mole fraction
Mole fraction of a = number of moles of a / total number of moles in a gas mixture
Define partial pressure
Partial pressure p(A) = mole fraction of A x total pressure
Define heterogenous equilibria?
Equilibrium species that have different states or phases.
Define homogenous equilibria.
Equilibriums species are all the same state
What states are included in the case of heterogenous equilibria?
gases and aqueous matter
What states are involved in the Kp expression?
ONLY gases
Why are liquid and solid concentration omitted?
They are constant.
What does R I C E stand for when calculation equilibrium quantities?
Ratio
Initial moles
Change in moles
Equilibrium moles
Kc = calculate conc Kp= calculate mole fraction and pp
How do you determine units in Kc or Kp expressions?
Cancel out units that are repeated on top and bottom
If units left over are in bottom move to top and change - to + and vice versa
What does K=1 indicate?
An equilibrium half way between reactants and products
What does K=100 indicate?
Equilibrium is well in favour of the PRODUCTS
What does k=0.01 indicate?
An equilibrium well in favour of the REACTANTS
What factors change K?
ONLY TEMPERATURE
What happens to equilibrium constant when pressure is changed?
Nothing
What happens to equilibrium constant when concentration is changed?
Nothing
What happens to equilibrium constant when in the presence of a catalyst?
Nothing
