Q

Physical properties of carboxylic acids

A
  1. Have high boiling point and strong intermolecular forces. VDW, DD, and HB.
  2. Are always soluble in organic solvents.
  3. If has 5 or less carbons in chain it is water soluble.
  4. If has 6 or more carbons in chain it is NOT water soluble b

Q

Naming carboxylic acids in chain and ring

A
  1. Find longest chain containing COOH and change e to -oic acid. (C in COOH should be 1st carbon)
  2. If in ring, name the ring and add the words carboxylic acid.
