Chapter 19 Flashcards
1
Q
Common naming for carboxylic acids
A
The carbon adjacent to the COOH is called the alpha Carbon. Also known as C2. Third carbon is beta. And 4th carbon is gamma.
2
Q
Naming diacids
A
Diacids contain two carboxy groups.
Name chain and then add -dioic acid
3
Q
Naming metal salts of carboxylate anions
A
Name of metal+parent(IUPAC) +-ate
4
Q
Physical properties of carboxylic acids
A
- Have high boiling point and strong intermolecular forces. VDW, DD, and HB.
- Are always soluble in organic solvents.
- If has 5 or less carbons in chain it is water soluble.
- If has 6 or more carbons in chain it is NOT water soluble b
5
Q
Naming carboxylic acids in chain and ring
A
- Find longest chain containing COOH and change e to -oic acid. (C in COOH should be 1st carbon)
- If in ring, name the ring and add the words carboxylic acid.
