Contour motive
Maintains contour (musical shape), changes intervals, rhythm may or may not be altered
Rhythmic motive
Maintains its rhythm but changes contour and intervals
Augmentation
Lengthening duration of pitches
Diminution
Shortening duration of pitches
Fragmentation
Isolation/development of a small but recognizable part of a motive
Period
2 phrases: first cadence is weak, second is strong and conclusive
Contrasting period
2 phrases don’t share same initial melodic material
Parallel period
2 phrases share same beginning melodic material
Double period
Group of 4 phrases in which PAC appears only at end
Antecedent
First phrase in a period, ends with inconclusive cadence

Consequent
Second phrase of a period, ends with conclusive cadence

Sentence structure
Consists of 8 measures in a 2+2+4 design
First unit
Motive is stated
Second unit
Motive is restated, usually varied or transposed
Third unit
Motive is broken up and developed with an accelerated harmony as phrase moves towards cadence
