Chapter 18 - Intro to Organic Chem Flashcards
Hydrocarbons
Organic compounds containing only hydrogens and Carbons (alkanes and alkenes)
Alkane characteristics
Single bonds
All saturated
C(n)+H(n+2)
-ane
Homologous series
family of organic compounds with similar features and chemical propertie scuz they have the same functional group
Alkenes
Double bond
Unsaturated
C(n)H(2n)
-ene
Alcohols
OH bond
C(n)H(2n+1)OH
Saturated
-ahol
Carboxylic Acids
COOH Bond
C(n)H(2n+1)COOH
Saturated
-anoic acid
Prefixes till 10
1- meth
2- eth
3- poly
4- but
5- pent
6- hex
7- hept
8- oct
9- nona
10- deca
Functional group
Part that characterises a compund
Structural formula
shows arrangement of groups
e.g. ethane = CH3CH3
Molecular Formula
Simplified formula
e.g. ethane = C2H6
intermolecular forces
Attractive forces between molecules
Structural Isomers
Same molecular formula, different build up or make up (structure) of atoms
Parent chain
Longest carbon chain in the compound
Which side to number parent chain from?
The side with the functional group or halogen
How to name compound cuz of where the functional group is
e.g. Propan-1-ol
Pent-3-ane
Esters
COO group around the middle (ester group)
Smell good/ fruity
Evaporate easily
Used in perfumes
What do you need to make an ester?
Carboxylic acid + alcohol
Ethanoic acid + Ethanol =?
Ethyl Ethanoate + H2O (byproduct)
Why do esters form a water byproduct?
OH from carboxylic acid bonds with H from alcohol
