Body dysmorphic disorder
A psychosocial disease that causes individuals to be inappropriately concerned, obsessed, or fixated on with their appearance.
Cellulitis
A potentially serious infection of the skin that presents a small,, red area surrounding a skin injury; those at risk include the elderly and those with a compromised immune system
Dermal scattering
The scatter or spread of light within the skin tissue.
Dyschromia
An abnormal display of facial hyperpigmentation due to solar damage.
Electodesiccation
A therapy that uses a device that emits low levels of radio-frequency and high frequency current, which arcs onto the skin and dries or destroys a targeted superficial lesion.
Hydroquinone
A topical medication that is used for bleaching or reducing excessive melanin lesions in the epidermis.
Microampere
A meausure of electric current; equivalent to one-millionth of an ampere.
Nikolski sign
An indication of a skin reaction; the clinical manifestations observed are perifollicular edema, erythema or blistering, or an epidermal separation caused by lateral pressure on the skin.
Photodamage
Skin damage caused by exposure to the suns rays; it can be as simple as fine lines or as serious as hyperpigmentation, actinic keratosis, deep rhytids, facial laxity, and invasive skin cancers.
Photorejuvenation
A series of laser or IPL facial treatments conducted to improve vascular and pigmented lesions and induce collagen stimulation.
Phototoxic
Describes a toxic effect triggered by exposure of light to the skin, sometimes as a result of topical or oral medications.
Poikiloderma of civatte
Mottled redness or brown discoloration appearing most commonly in women on the sides of the neck or upper chest. It is noncancerous sun damage.
Preventative maintenance
Routine equipment calibration and device checks by qualified, trained biomedical engineers to guarantee that the equipment is in appropriate working order.
Pulse width
The timing of light energy, or how long the laser beam is actually striking the skin.
