Chapter 18-20- atmosphere Flashcards
Greenhouse effect
Gases in the troposphere absorb infrared radiation and reflect some of it back as heat
Ozone
Absorbs uv rays through its creation and degradation
Required at the stratosphere 10-30km range
Acid rain
Oxides of sulphur/nitrogen form acids that form solution with rain water
SO2/SO3 fully react with water
2NO2 forms both acidic products
CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons)
Catalyst for the breakdown of ozone
Like enzymes they can be reused
Carbon monoxide
Binds to haemoglobin (oxygen)
Kills at 200ppm
Photochemical smog
Forms on cloudless windless days in which hot air rises trapping reactants together
Properties of nitrogen
Insoluble
Low reactivity due to freaking triple bond
Oxygen
Slightly soluble
Supports combustion
Reacts with most metals and nonmetals
Carbon dioxide
Rarely supports combustion
Denser than air
Sublimes
Slightly water soluble
