Chapter 17: Facial Machines Flashcards
facial machines
Electrotherapy
use of electrical devices for therapeutic benefits
Hot towels
used for face & body treatments; provide warm, soothing, & softening benefit to the skin & are utilized for removing facial masks & softening skin before doing extractions
Magnifying lamp
Loupe; magnifies the face to help esthetician treat and analyze the skin
Diopters
powers of magnification (10Xs)
Wood’s Lamp
filtered black light that is used to illuminate fungi, bacterial disorders, pigmentation problems, and other skin problems
Skin Scope
larger skin analysis tools with UV light & interior mirror; similar to Wood’s Lamp
Rotary Brush
brush machine used to lightly exfoliate the skin
Vacuum Machine
suction machine; 2 main functions: [suction dirt & impurities from skin] [stimulate dermal layer, lymphatic, & blood circulation
Galvanic Current
constant and direct current (DC); uses a positive & negative pole to produce 2 significant chemical reactions: Desinscrustation, and Iontophorosis
Desincrustation
process used to soften & emulsify sebum & blackheads in the follicles
Iontophorosis
process of infusing water-soluble products into the skin with the use of electric current, such as the use of positive & negative poles of a galvanic machine or a microcurrent device
Saponification
chemical reaction during desincrustation where the current transforms sebum into soap
Ion
an atom or molecule that carries an electrical charge
Cataphoresis
process of forcing an acidic (positive) product into deeper tissues using galvanic current from a positive pole towards a negative pole; tightens and calms skin
Anaphoresis
process of infusing an alkaline (negative) product into the tissues from the negative poles towards the positive poles
