believed that expressions of emotions, like other behaviors, are products of evolution. compared emotional expressions of different species with 3 main ideas.

  • expressions of emotion evolve from behaviors that indicate what an animal is likely to do next.
  • if the behaviors produced through these expressions benefit the animal displaying them, the expressions will evolve in ways that enhance their communicative function, and their original function may be lost.
