Chapter 17: Blood Flashcards
What are the 4 general functions of blood?
- Transport
- Buffering
- Defense
- Clotting
What does blood transport?
Blood gases, nutrients, ions, and hormones.
What does the blood buffer?
pH, temperature, and osmolarity
What does the blood defend against?
Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and dead/damaged body tissues.
What is the purpose of clotting?
It prevents the loss of fluid through damaged circulatory vessels.
What is the blood volume for a healthy male and female?
Male: 5 - 6 liters
Female: 4 - 5 liters
Blood is a component of which fluid compartment?
Extracellular Fluid
What is plasma?
The liquid fraction of the blood, and is more than 90% water by volume.
What are the plasma proteins?
Albumin, globulins, fibrinogen, and regulatory proteins (enzymes, proenzymes, hormones)
What does plasma composition consist of?
Plasma proteins, other solutes, and water.
What do albumins do?
Prevent swelling and shrinkage of cells
What do globulins do?
Defend the body against foreign pathogen
What do fibrinogens do?
Prevent fluid loss during injury
What do hormones do?
Serve as ligands for receptors throughout the body
What are the formed elements composed of?
Platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells
