Chapter 17 Flashcards
Municipal solid waste
Non liquid waste that comes from homes institutions and small business
Industrial solid waste
Waste from production of consumer goods mining agriculture petroleum extraction and refining
Hazardous waste
solid or liquid waste that is toxic, chemically reactive, flammable or corrosive
3 main components of waste management
minimizing the amount of waste we generate, recycling discarded materials disposing of waste safely and effectively
waste stream
the flow of waste as it moves from its sources towards disposal destinations
Sanitary landfills
waste is buried in ground, or piled in large mounds to prevent waste from contaminating the environment
Leaching
Liquid that results when substances from the trash dissolves in water as rain water moves downward
Materials recovery facilities
Where workers and machines sort items
Industrial ecology
Redesigns industrial systems to reduce resource imputs and to maximize both physical and economic efficiency q
Life cycle analysis
the life cycle of a given product
e-waste
Electronic waste, (computers cellphones, ect)
Surface impoundments
Liquid hazardous waste is stored in surface impoundments. Shallow depressions that are lined with plastic and clay that holds the hazardous waste
Deep well injection
A well drilled way down below into porous rock, and the waste is injected
Brownfields
Lands whose reuse or development are complicated by hazardous materials
