Chapter 17 Flashcards
Describe John Tyler’s come-up.
John Tyler was meant to be the Vice President under Whig party figure William Henry Harrison. Because of his old age, Harrison died only 4 weeks into office. Tyler succeeded him.
Why was John Tyler singled out and disliked by his adoptive Whig party?
Although Vice under Harrison, a notorious Whig figure, his internal beliefs conflicted with those of the majority Whig party, and when Whig-agenda proposals were pushed into office for him to sign, he vetoed them.
Reluctantly, to crawl out of the Panic of 1837 (economic depression), he passed the Tariff of 1842 to put American products on stage.
Pre-war, what was the scope like in Texas?
Texas was independent of Mexico for a few years. It was the “Lone Star Republic”. Mexico was ready for war with Texas if it decided to turn to the United States for annexation. Texas was offering to fall under the wings of Britain and France. This was a great benefit to Britain since it would give the chance to conquer the US by turning Texas against the US. France had the same interests as well to possibly conquer.
