Chapter 16 Robbins Flashcards
one of the most common diseases worldwide
cause: focal demineralization of tooth structure (enamel and dentin) by acidic products of bacterial sugar fermentation
principal cause of tooth loss before age 35
caries
inflammation of the oral mucosa surrounding the teeth, caused by accumulation of dental plaque (a sticky, colorless biofilm) and calculus that is most prevalent and severe in adolescence
clinical: erythema, edema, bleeding, contour changes, loss of soft tissue adaptation to teeth
gingivitis
inflammatory process that affects the supporting structures of the teeth (periodontal ligaments) alveolar bone, and cementum
periodontitis
can develop from 3 sources: spread of infection from pericranial contiguous focus in 25-50% of cases (sinuses, middle ear, or dental infection)
dental infections, ethmoid or frontal sinusitis: spreads to the frontal lobe, and
subacute/chronic otitis media or mastoiditis: spreads to the inferior temporal lobe and cerebellum
brain abscess
periodontitis can be a feature of a these systemic disease of syndrome
AIDS
Leukemia
Crohn disease
Diabetes
Down syndrome
Sarcoidosis
Syndromes associated with DEFECTS in neutrophil
common, often recurrent, exceedingly painful, superficial oral mucosal ulcerations of unknown etiology (especially if <20 y.o.)
associated with immunologic disorders including celiac disease, IBD, and Behçet disease
single or multiple, shallow, hyperemic, mucosal ulcerations covered by thin exudate and rimmed by narrow erythema zone
resolve spontaneously in 7 to 10 days
aphthous ulcers (canker sores)
