Chapter 16 - Aqueous Solutions Flashcards
What is a precipitation reaction?
Occurs if ions in solution combine yo form a new compound that is insoluble in water
- two solutions of compounds are mixed and a solid product is formed
What is a precipitate?
An insoluble compound formed from a precipitation reaction
- solid product formed
Eg. Hydrates ions ( Cl and Ag+ surrounded by water molecules)
—> strong attraction between Ag+ and Cl- ions
—-> ionic lattice AgCl forms
What is concentration?
Concentration describes the relative amount of solute and solvent present in the solution
- quantity if solute dissolved in solvent
What is a concentrated solution?
A solution in which the ratio of solute and solvent is high is said to be concentrated
What is a dilute solution?
A solution in which the ratio of solute to solvent is low is said to be a dilute solution
What is molarity
The number of moles of solute per litre of solution
Mol-1 / L or M
What is dilution?
The process of adding more solvent to a solution is dilution
