Chapter 16 and 17 Flashcards
What volcano has magma that travels through the oceanic crust?
Hawaii
What volcano has magma that travels through the continental crust?
Yellowstone
Which volcano is characterized by hot springs and geysers?
Yellowstone
Do both Yellowstone and Hawaii have evidence of past glaciers?
Yes
Are volcanos characterized by an explosivity scale?
Yes
Geologists try to better understand the magma plumbing system at the parks to predict future hazards. TRUE OR FALSE?
True
How does a geyser differ from a regular hot spring?
Geysers are a hot water fountain while a hot spring is
What two volcanoes does Hawaii National Park have?
Kilauea and Mauna Loa
Kilauea
one of the world’s most active volcanoes
Mauna Loa
world’s most massive shield volcano
What is the largest known volcano in the world?
Yellowstone supervolcano
What is the name of the largest volcanic system in North America?
Yellowstone
How do hotspots form volcanoes?
a plume of magma rises from inside the earth pierces through the crust and forms a volcano
Is Yellowstone explosive or effusive?
explosive
Is Hawaii explosive or effusive?
effusive
When the plate moves over the plume does it leave behind a chain of extinct volcanoes?
Yes
Plume moves, plate doesn’t. Plate moves, plume doesn’t
Plate moves, plume doesn’t
What happens to the older volcanoes who have no supply of magma?
they will eventually sink and erode
Yellowstone is cut by the continental divide which means..
the topographic ridgepole of north america that seperates atlantic and pacific drainage
Is yellowstone both a supervolcano and a caldera
Yes
Do geysers look and behave the same?
No two geysers look or behave the same.
Geyser
hot water fountain
Hot Spring
hot underground water intersects to the ground surface
What conditions need to be present for a geyser to function?
1) powerful heat source, usually magma
2) a plentiful supply of water
3) a watertight plumbing system capable of holding a large volume of water and withstanding the tremendous pressure of steam and superheated water
What are common geyser traits?
- are in areas where rhyolite is abundant
- expel water from rain or snow, as opposed to magmatic water
- occur in water from rain or snow, as opposed to magmatic water
- occur in areas of recent or active magmatism
- occur where the supply of heat is abudant
What are some more common geyser traits?
- are at high latitudes where precipitation rates are high
- formed following the last ice age, as inferred by stratigraphy and radiometric dates of sinter deposits
- most are transient features with periods of activity and dormancy
Why does Hawaii not have geysers?
bc basalt is not a suitable rock for creating the scenario to trigger a geyser
Where does freshwater come from in Hawaii?
volcanic-rock aquifers and dikes. basaltic rocks are the most productive aquifers in volcanic rocks.
Can Hawaii have explosive eruptions like Yellowstone or mt. st helens?
Hawaii can have violent eruptions. Related to magma’s interaction with groundwater
Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI)
measured from 0-8
