Chapter 16 π Flashcards
Ocean waves
Move water in a circular motion
Ocean surface currents
Are caused by winds
Density currents
Moves ocean water downward
Point-source pollution
Pollution that can be traced back to one source
Coral bleaching
The loss of color in corals that occurs when stressed corals expel the algae that live in them. Slight changes in water temperature can cause this
Sea floor
Has valleys, mountains, and underwater volcanoes. It is similar to continents
Neap tides
When the Earth, the Moon , and the Sun form a right angle. Happens during a First-Quarter Moon/Third Quarter Moon.
Spring tides
The greatest tidal range. Occurs when Earth, the Moon ,and the Sun form a straight line. Happens during a Full Moon/New Moon
Tsunamis
A wave that forms when an ocean disturbance suddenly moves a large volume of water. Can be caused by underwater earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, or ice breaking away from a glacier
Upwelling
Deep, cold ocean water coming to the surface
Surface waves
Have long wavelengths
Surface zone
Photosynthesis occurs here. Receives the most sunlight. Shallowest.
Middle zone
A.K.A Twilight zone
Deep zone
A.K.A Midnight zone. Plants donβt grow there. Animals who live there make their own light.
How might low calcium levels in the oceans coral reefs?
There would be fewer amounts of algae. Fewer coral reefs. Coral Bleaching would occur.
