Chapter 16 Flashcards
Which other system does the endocrine system inter act with?
Nervous System
Is the endocrine system fast or slow compared to the nervous system? The effect?
Slow to act, long lasting effects
Describe Endocrine glands
Ductless glands, products travels by blood some are pure secreting
Which endocrine gland is also classified as a neuroendocrine gland?
Hypothalamus
Define hormone
Chemical substances secreted into blood to alter the activity of its target cell
2 types amino acids and steroids
What glands are apart of the endocrine system?
Pineal gland, hypothalamus pituitary gland, thyroid gland, Thymus, adrenal gland, pancreas, and gonads
What is target specifity?
Only cells that have receptors for the hormone can be altered by it
What type of feed back system controls hormone levels in the blood?
Negative
Describe the pituitary gland?
Inferior to the hypothalamus shape and size of a garden pea
What tissue class is each lobe of pituitary gland?
Anterior:Epithelia
Posterior: Nervous
What is the organization of the hypophysis all portal system?
Vascular pathway with 2 capillary beds, one for hypothalamic hormones to enter the blood and the other for hormones to exit the blood to stimulate the pituitary
What controls the release of hormones from the anterior pituitary gland?
Hormones from the hypothalamus
What is the LARGEST pure secreting Endo gland?
Thyroid
What is the shape and function of the thyroid gland?
Butterfly shaped on the anterior portion of the neck secretes hormones to calcium levels in the blood to stimulate the pituitary
What connects 2 lobes of the thyroid
Isthmus
