Chapter 16 Flashcards
A solution that contains more solute than it can theoretically hold at a given temperature; excess solute precipitates if a seed crystal is added.
Supersaturated Solution
A solution containing the maximum amount of solute for a given amount of solvnet at a constant temperature and pressure; an equilibrium exists between undissolved solute and ions in a solution.
Saturated Solution
A mixture whose particles are intermediate in size between those of a suspension and a solution.
Colloid
The collodial dispersion of one liquid to another.
Emulsion
A homogeneous mixture; consists of solutes dissolved in a solvent.
Solution
A mixture that is not uniform in compostion; componenets are not evenly distributed throughout the mixture
Heterogeneous Mixture
A process that occurs when an ionic solute dissolves; in a solution, solvent molecules surround the positive and negative ions.
Solution
A substance that is incapable of being dissolved
Insoluble
A mixture from which some of the particles settle out slowly upon standing.
Supension
A solution that contains less solute that a saturated solution at a given temperature and pressure
Unsaturated Solution
Describes liquids that are insoluble in one another; oil and water
Immiscible
A soluyion that contains a small amount of solute.
Dilute Solution
Describes liquids that dissolve in one another in all proportions.
Miscible
A mixture that is unifrom in composition; componenets are evenly distributed and not easily distinguished.
Homogenous Mixture
The amount of a substance that dissolved in a given quantity of solvent at specified conditions of temperaure and pressure to produce a saturated solution.
