Chapter 16-22 Flashcards
ITP format
“1. Pre-surface preparation
2. Surface Preparation
3. Pre Coating Application
4. Coating Application
5. Post Coating Application/Cure
6. Final Inspection”
Basic Min of ITP
“1. The portion of work that must be inspected as required by Spec (Activity)
2. How the work will be inspected (Inspection Method)
3. Min standard (Acceptance Criteria)
”
Complex of ITP
“includes Basic +
1. Standard test + Reference
2. Frequency
3. Spec Reference”
Review an ITP and identify any inconsistencies, omissions, or ambiguities are present
SBV or VS% “solid by volume or solid volume percentage
measure of volume of a coating that is left after the coating has dried or cured”
solid by weight =DO NOT USE this value
WFT = DFT / SBV
Thinner does NOT affect coverage, INCREASES the total volume without increasing the total solids
Adjusted SBV = (SBV) / (100% + thinner %)
WFT new DFT / Adjusted SBV
one gallon of paint at 100% SBV = 1604 ft^2
Practical covereage = (1604 X SBV x TE ) / DFT
TE transfer efficiency
Material Consumption = Area / Practical coverage
where should surface temp readings be taken?
“1. actual work location
2. areas that are likely to be hotter or colder than the normal”
Accurately measure the air temp, humidity and calculate dew point using a sling pyshrometer
sling pyscrometer
“measures wet / dry bulb temperature (wet is always lower than dry)
Depression of wet-bulb temperature = Dry - Wet “
“dry = measure ambient temp
wet = measure heat loss from the evaporation of water”
face wind and step backand forth a few steps
need 2 same consecutive wet bulb tem
do not use in near or below freezing point
surface temp thermometers
allow thermometer to stablize for 3-5 minutes
surface temp thermometers issues
“1. dirty or contaminated sensors
2. not allowing to stabilize
3. too much or too litte pressure
3. dragging meter between surface temp reading”
electronic hygrometers
“digital hygrometers can measure RH and air temp, but not calculate dew point, digital dew point meter can
1. turn on
2. wait for the device to stablize
3. touch the surface with probe
4. allow dew point meter to stablize for 30 sec to min”
ASTM E337
Std test method for measuing humidity with a Psychrometer (ambient temp 32-122F) . Wet bulb temp not lower than 33.8F, and restricted to ambient pressure not differing from std atm pressure by more than 3%
ASTM D3276
std guide for painting inspectors (use for surface contact thermometer)
ASTM D4230
Std test method for hygrometer
Bresle patch (collect sampeles to analyze it for presence of soluable salts)
“insert syringe through the foam
withdraw and inject a min of 4x”
Latex sleeve and tirator tube
(collect samples to test for soluable salts and their concerntation) “adhere the sleeve and agiate the soluation for 2 MINutes
Examine for color change - WHITE = chloride level , PINK = Normal”
Potassium Ferricyanicde (detect if soluable ferrours iron salts are present)
“Qualitative test
use distilled water (or deionized water)
indicator turns to Prussian Blue”
SSPC technology Guide 15
Field methods for extraction and analysis of soluble salts on steel
ASTM D4417 Methods A
“Surface Comparators (Fine / Medium/ Coarse / Finner than fine / and Coarse than Coarse)
1. Verify test area is clean
2. select the appropriate surface profile comparator (Type S for Shot , Type G for Grit)
3. Examine the pprepare surface and compare each segments “
