republic, dominated N. Italy + Tuscany, major city-state, Medici family’s rule over Florence encouraged artistic expression (part of Renaissance), cultural center of Italy
Usury
charging borrowers a fee on money loaned to them
Secularism
separation of state from Church (Italy from Catholic Church)
Humanism
the study of classical (Ancient Greek and roman) ideas and culture, study of grammar, rhetoric, poetry, moral philosophy, and history

The local spoken language of a scholar
