Define drug:
A
any substance taken into the body that modifies or affects chemical reactions in the body.

How do antibiotics work?
A
they target bacterial infections by disrupting the formation of a cell wall and so bacteria can’t reproduce, this is also why they don’t affect human cells and viruses.

What happens when bacteria is resistant to antibiotics?
A
you get superbugs that increase rapidly
eg. MRSA (methicillin- resistant staphylococcus aureus)

What are some affects of excessive alcohol and heroin abuse?
A
- longer reaction time
- less self-control
- addiction with powerful withdrawal symptoms
- crime
- powerful depressants
- long-term use causes liver damage
- can cause infection (heroin needles)

Causes of tobacco smoking:
A
- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema causes weakened alveoli walls and chronic bronchitis which causes excess mucus to be produced.)
- coronary heart disease
- lung cancer
