Chapter 15: Airway management, Respiration, and Artificial Ventilation Flashcards
Structures ABOVE the epiglottis are considered…
Upper airway
Structures BELOW the epiglottis are considered…
Lower Airway
Name the structures of the upper airway
Nasopharynx, (frontal, maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid) sinuses, Oropharynx, Laryngopharynx, and the Larynx
Name the structures of the lower airway
Trachea, bronchial tree, alveoli, and the lungs
Define Atelectasis
An abnormal condition characterized by the collapse of lung tissue. It prevents respiratory exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide
Define BPAP
Bilevel positive airway pressure. Airway support that combines partial ventilatory support and continuous positive airway pressure. It allows the pressure to vary during each breath cycle.
How many alveoli do both the lungs have?
About 300 million
What is the purpose of surfactant on the alveoli?
Prevents the alveoli from collapsing
How many lobes are in each lung? How many all together?
left lung-2 lobes Right lung-3 lobes. all together 5 lobes
Define respiration
Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide
Define ventilation
The mechanical movement of air into and out of the lungs
