Chapter 15 Flashcards
What is evolution?
The change in a species over time.
Who is Darwin? What book did he write? What was it about? What did he discover? Where did he discover this?
Darwin was a scientist that discovered natural selection on the HMS Beagle. He wrote the Orgin of Species which is about his study’s from all over the world. He discovered bat rail selection of different species.
What do fossils provide?
Strong direct evidence of evolution.
What are homologous and vestigial structures? What do they do?
Homo- inherited structures from ancestors. They provide evidence of a common ancestor.
Vest- structures that are reduced forms of functional structures. They also provide evidence of a common ancestor.
What are embryo logical and biochemical traits? Examples?
They provide insight into the evolution of species.
What can explain why certain species live in charting locations?
Biogeography
What does an trail selection do?
Gives rise to features that increase reproductive success.
Describe the Hardy-Weinberg principle.
The conditions within evolution doesn’t occur
Where does speciation begin?
Small isolated pop.
How does selection operate?
By favoring average or extreme traits.
What are two models that explain the tempo of evolution?
Punctuated equilibrium and gradualism.
