Pressure Ulcers
A sore that forms as a result of the body pressing against a surface for a long period of time.
Contractures
Condition that occurs when a joint is held in the same position for too long of a time causing for the tendons to shorten, become stiff and possibly permanent loss of motion in the joint.
Body Alignment
Positioning of the body so the spine is not twisted or crooked.
Supportive Devices: Devices like pillows or rolled sheets to help maintain proper body alignment.
Supine (dorsal recumbent) position
A position in which the person lies on their back with the bed flat and head supported by pillow.
Fowler’s Position
A position where the head of the bed is elevated to 45-60 degrees.
Semi-Fowler’s (low-Fowler’s) Position
A position in which the head is elevated 30-45 degrees.
Supportive Devices
Devices like pillows or rolled sheets to help maintain proper body alignment.
High-Fowler’s position
A position where the head of the bed is elevated to 60-90 degrees.
Lateral Position
A position in which a person lies on their side.
Prone Position
When a person lies with their abdomen and head turned to one side.
Sims’ position
A position in which the person lies on their side with their head turned to one side and their knee bent and supported by a pillow. The lower leg is straight and the lower arm extends out from the side with the hand down near the hips and the palm turned upward.
Shearing
The force created when something is pulled across a surface causing resistance leading to skin breakdown and tearing.
Friction
Force created when two surfaces rub against each other.
Logrolling
Technique for turning a person in one fluid motion to keep the spine in alignment
Transfer
Movement of something or someone from one place to another area.
