A tooth, a root, or an implant for retaining a fixed or removable prosthesis: the teeth adjacent to a pontic in a bridge
Abutment
A fixed prosthetic device placed in the mouth to replace missing teeth
Bridge
Prosthetic device in mouth attached at only one side; useful in an area with little stress such as a missing lateral
Cantilever bridge
Dental cavities; tooth decay
Caries
Top or highest part of a tooth; often called a cap
Crown
A prosthesis that replaces missing teeth in the same arch; a full denture is used when all the natural teeth are missing; a partial is when some of the natural teeth are missing
Denture
A tooth moving into the space created by a missing tooth
Drifting
The space between the maxillary central incisors in humans; space between two adjacent teeth in the same dental arch
Diastema
To cause to become closed
Occlude
Portion of a bridge that replaces a missing tooth
Pontic
Restoration created when several layers of pure gold are placed in the cavity preparation
Gold foil
Space in the gingival sulcus ( beyond the normal 1-3 mm )created by periodontal disease
Periodontal pocket
A resin retained, fixed bridge,, that replaces one tooth
Maryland bridge
Beginning tooth decay that has not broken through the enamel into the dentin
Incipient
Excess restorative material projecting over the cavity margin
Overhang
