Chapter 14 Vocab. Flashcards
Living parts of an ecosystem
Biotic
Non living parts of an ecosystem
Abiotic
Process of reducing a gas or vapor to a liquid or solid
Condensation
Fall products of condensation in the atmosphere as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
Precipitation
The process of becoming vapor
Evaporation
Physical and chemical processes by which a living thing exchanges gases with environment
Respiration
The movement of water vapor out of a plant and into the air
Transpiration
Process by which green plants and other producers use simple compounds and energy from light to make sugar, an energy rich compound
Photosynthesis
The continuous movement of carbon through Earths atmosphere, and living things on earth
Carbon cycle
Natural fuel such as coal or gas formed from the remain of living organisms
Fossil fuels
The continuous movement of nitrogen through earths atmosphere, and living things on earth
Nitrogen cycle
An organism that captures energy and stores it in food as chemical energy
Producer
Organisms that get their energy by eating or consuming other organisms (primary, secondary, tertiary)
Consumers
Organisms that break down dead plant and animal matter into simpler compounds
Decomposer
Describes the feeding relationship between producer and a single chain of consumers in an ecosystem
Food chain
