What did the church become involved in?
A serious power struggle that hurt the churches ability to carry out Jesus’s mission
What happened because of the lack of political structures?
There were to political structure to hold society together, bishops assumed many of the responsibilities once held by government leaders
What is lay investure
The practice of having political leaders assign jobs to bishops and priest
What did bishops do under lay investure?
It was easy for them to become rich ,and owners and to forget about being spiritual leaders

Knew that the pope alone has full authority to care for soles and that he alone should appoint bishops, make church laws, and for, diocese

He defied pope Gregory and continued to name bishops. The pope told the king that he would no longer be a member of the church if he continued to interfere in church government
What did king Henry do?
Visited the pope, stood barefoot in the snow, dressed in monks robes and begged for forgiveness. The pope forgave him

What was the differences between the eastern and western churches?
East- priest were permitted to marry, west- could not marry
They both thought differently about original sin, the use of pictures and statues, the place of the Holy Spirit in the trinity and the authority of the bishop of Rome

The political rivalry between the two great cities of Constantinople in the east abs Rome in the west

Means that a person is separated from the church especially from the Eucharist

What was a positive and negative of the crusades?
Possitive- stirred up enthusiasm for the Christian faith and opened the doors between east and west p. Pilgrimages were promoted, as was a new devotion to the passion and death of Jesus, the way of the cross was introduced to Europe
Negative- atrocities were committed by both Christians and Muslims during the crusades. Some participates only to get rich. The crusades led to suffering and death for many

Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind
What is a heresy?
When a baptized catholic denies a truth about God that the church teachers
What is the inquisition?
An official catholic court. It is used to examine, investigate and sometimes punishes those accused of a heresy

Compare the great commandment and Hersey?
The great commandment and heresy are total opposites. In the great commandment we are told to love God, which means we fully believe in everything he tells us. A heresy is someone who denies who God is and what God has showed is. If we deny God we cannot love him.

What are the negatives to an inquisition?
The punishment could become too excessive. The church later on felt regret for the what the court had done.
What are the positives to I question?
Was successful halting heresies. It also was successful in protecting suspected heretics form more severe penalties by civil officials

High spirited, rich, young man . He followed a call from God to give up his carefree life and love according to the gospel.

They lived like Christ, without land or money, they were the first mendicant order

To live the gospel value of poverty and to be concerned for people who were poor
